Monumenti Aperti - Open Monuments

knowing the cities, going through itineraries traced by a meaningful succession of works with a monumental importance to know and recognize. Rediscovering traces, signs, testimonies of the past. Regain civil and religious traditions to strengthen the collective identity, the sense of affiliation to own community and discover, in the stratifications that the history of the cities offers, the relationships with other countries, the sense of sharing and understanding the history and the present. The cities are in that way perceived as a homogeneous container of history, able to represent that affiliation as a visible file and that people can cross.
Pupils, volunteers and associations, freely and spontaneously use their initiative to sensitize all the people on the value of the cultural goods and the historical, archaeological and cultural patrimony of their own city. In this sense, Monumenti Aperti is a way to involve citizens and stimulate participation in civic life.
Inside the event, training curses are provided that develop the competencies of the volunteers. Such courses have been object of our study and evaluation, together with the relapse that the demonstration = active citizen has on the last beneficiaries: the visitors.
The aim of the project is to develop the interest of young people in our cultural patrimony, its defence and increase in value as well as in the safeguarding of archaeological, historical and artistic goods; at the same time developing their consciousness to belong to a collectivity.
Informal Learning Activities:
Imago Mundi provides training courses focused on Monumenti Aperti, Open Monuments. The course is structured in five learning units for volunteers, teachers, public administrations and pupils. Every learning unit contains different documents and learning materials which explains how to do the event.
Target Group and Context:
We have the focus on two possible target groups:
- young people, pupils, volunteers;
In particular, our target group was a class of students (average age of 12 years) of the junior high school "E. Zuddas" of Dolianova (Cagliari); the pupils participants have been 30. On the other side, we decided to verify the impact of the active citizenship on the visitors on a wide scale: 1.000 questionnaires were the results.

- selection of the right methodology of evaluation
- assessment (ex ante and ex post)
- interpretation of results
Being a concrete and involving experience, Monumenti Aperti helps youngsters, beneficiaries of the project together with the citizens involved in the event, to discover, valuate and give value to their own individual resources; allowing the acquisition of information on the territorial reality in which they live and making them conscious of the aesthetic, cultural, educational and social aspects of the environment, of the urban context, of the historical scenery they live in.
Concerning the evaluation on active citizenship, major difficulties were to choose the right methodology and which focus group to evaluate, considering that Monumenti Aperti is a big event with different levels of participants.
